Audi doesn’t offer an RS 8, and probably never will. But with the release of the new S8 Plus, we wonder if it will ever have to. Because Ingolstadt’s new flagship performance sedan packs a mighty punch. “Plus” doesn’t even begin to describe the enhancements Audi and Quattro GmbH have wrought on the ultimate new version of the A8 sedan. Power is increased from 520 horsepower to 605, besting anything else in its class. Only the Mercedes S65, which packs four more cylinders and two additional liters of displacement,...Continue reading »

After years of legal wrangling, the long-soured partnership between Volkswagen and Suzuki looks finally to be coming out of arbitration, according to Bloomberg. As a sign of the Japanese brand’s improved fortunes, hedge fund Third Point LLC recently bought an undisclosed stake in the company. The investor reported seeing a major opportunity in the successful Maruti Suzuki business in India. As an investment, the only major problem that Third Point found with Suzuki was its legal battle with VW. “The company’s greatest...Continue reading »

As surely as night follows day, an open-top Ferrari V8 has arrived a scant few months after the coupe.Yet while there’s no great surprise about the new 488 Spider – a 488 GTB for the sun-seekers, as you’ll have deduced – there’s plenty of fanfare. Being a modern Ferrari, the 488 Spider’s key boasts all centre, somewhat unromantically, around maths and science. Like this one: it’s as structurally stiff as the coupe it’s spun from, giving it a full 23 per cent more torsional rigidity than the 458 Spider it supersedes. Be...Continue reading »

The latest rumors emanating from the House of the Raging Bull say that Lamborghini is planning another million-dollar, ultra-exclusive supercar. Lambo is tipped to bring it to Pebble Beach next month, but it won’t be showing it to the general public. Lamborghini has a proud recent history of turning its flagship supercars into something even more desirable. You’ll remember the Reventón that was based on the Murciélago previewed the Aventador and was offered in a limited run of 20 coupes and 15 roadsters with a seven-figure...Continue reading »

The Chevrolet SS is one of the best cars no one’s buying. It’s a Bowtie-badged version of the Australian Holden Commodore with a 6.2-liter LS3 V8 under the hood. It’s got a six-speed manual transmission, General Motors’ sophisticated Magnetic Ride Control suspension, and rear-wheel drive. It’s a fullsize sedan that comes with every possible amenity you could want. And it’s less than $50,000. Chevrolet sold 2,479 SS sedans in 2014. That means it was outsold by every other vehicle the automaker offers,...Continue reading »

We don’t yet know if the next Audi RS4 will come to the US, but whoever gets it could find an electric turbocharger under the hood according to a report in Auto Express. The 4.2-liter V8 that has served for two RS4 generations is retiring from the line, replaced by a twin-turbocharged version of the supercharged 3.0-liter V6 used in the S4. But instead of using two sequential turbochargers – a smaller one to eliminate lag while a larger, more powerful turbo spools up – batteries charged by brake regeneration could power...Continue reading »

It was afternoon getting on evening at the Bernardus Lodge, a resort 10 miles inland from the northern California idyll of Carmel-by-the-Sea. A guitarist was plucking Somewhere Over the Rainbow, the notes lilting on a jasmine-charged breeze. A waiter arrived with a dish of pickled vegetables and a beverage. The drink was tall and I was grateful. It had been a long day, and there was a lot to reflect on, not least of which a certain dream that, thanks to a daring corporate calculation and the exertions of a small assembly line in...Continue reading »

Donating to charity is good for the soul. You feel good and help out those in need, and while you should donate out of the goodness of your heart, there’s nothing wrong with getting something in return. That’s doubly true if that something (or somethings) happen to run on gasoline… a lot of gasoline. For just $3 (plus $40,000 in taxes), you could park not one, but two high-powered Mopars in your driveway. The big item, of course, is the world’s most powerful Dodge Challenger Hellcat. Dubbed the Hellcat X after...Continue reading »

The ninth-generation Honda Accord gets a thorough refresh for 2016, and the big theme here is technology. Inside and out, the updated Accord packs a host of upgrades in an effort to keep Honda’s best-seller fresh in the minds of consumers. The big news is a new, seven-inch Display Audio infotainment interface with two of the latest in-car tech must-haves: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These come standard on EX models and above. The revised infotainment system doesn’t replace the outgoing two-screen setup inside the Accord,...Continue reading »

Chevrolet is taking a crowbar to its crossover lineup so it can slide in a new entry between the Equinox (shown) and the Traverse, according to a report in Automotive News. The current Equinox, a tweener compared to its rivals, will get smaller when the next-generation vehicle moves to the Delta platform that underpins the Chevrolet Cruze. The next Traverse will remain full-size, the liberated space between it and the smaller Equinox making room for a fourth offering from the brand. Designed on a short-wheelbase version of the Traverse...Continue reading »
