Here are a few things you would need to start becoming a truck driver.

License

You need to obtain a CDL to drive a tractor-trailer. If you are working for a company, they may need you to haul tankers or doubles. These would require more endorsements on your license. You have to know and keep up with the laws, so you do not get fined and put out of service. This is your employment, and you need to take it seriously.

Work

You need to find work when you are a truck driver. Make sure your pricing is competitive. If you are able to haul hazardous material, that can get you a bigger payday. If you go for a long drive across the country, finding truck loads available on the way home can make you extra money. You get paid to move product, so if your trailer is empty then you are not making any money.

Equipment

You will need to have the right equipment to haul your product. The larger you become, the more trucks and trailers you can have. There are single axle tractors that are rated to haul less weight. If you start hauling heavier things, you will need a dual axle. You can have different trailers such as a flatbed, tanker, or enclosed. If you have more options for your clientele, you may find that you will be able to get more business.

Record

You have to have a clean record if you want to get a commercial driver’s license. They take the physicals, various health, and driving requirements very seriously. You want to have a clean driver’s record so you will not have to pay as much insurance for your business. If you are a liability on the road, you can get put out of service by being a hazard.

Work Ethic

You’ll have to be willing to work long hours. There can be small margins as a truck driver, so you may not become rich. This job will be able to support you if you are willing to put in the time. Your commitment to the job will help you become a successful driver.

A truck driver is needed to move things across the country. Without these men and women, the country would not have the necessary supplies in places that need them.
