What To Do If You’ve Been In A Motorcycle Accident

Getting into an accident is the one fear everyone who gets onto a motorcycle has. Motorcycle accidents are much more dangerous than car accidents, and can often cause more injury to you and your bike. If this happens to you, it can be a scary experience, and it can be hard to remember what you need to do. While we hope that you never end up in a motorcycle accident, if you should find yourself in this situation, here are the steps that you should follow in order to make everything a little easier on yourself.

Motorcycle Accident

Get To A Safe Location

The first thing that you should do is get yourself to a safe location. If you are in the middle of the road, get over to the side and away from further danger. Unless you are physically unable to move, you should make sure that you are safe before proceeding to the rest of the steps.

Call The Police

Once you are in a safe location, you should call the police. You will want them on hand to make a proper report of the accident, and to provide you with medical assistance should anyone need it. You want to do this step first as it is likely going to take the police a few minutes to respond to your call. During that time you can move on and complete some of the other steps.

Get Medical Attention

If your accident caused you to become injured, then you should take care of yourself before proceeding. Wait for an ambulance to arrive, and try not to make the injury any worse. Even if it is just a small injury, you will want to get yourself to the hospital at some point so that an official report can be made. Without this, you will be unable to claim damages from the accident later on, so it is good to get this on record.

Exchange Information

If your accident involved another person, and if you are not too badly injured, now is the time to start exchanging information with them. Get their name, phone number, and insurance information, and provide them with the same info about yourself. Make sure you have everything written down and stored in a safe place, as you may need to contact this person at a later date.

Take Pictures

For those of you with cameras on your phone, now is a good time to start snapping some pictures. Pictures can be used during both insurance claims and lawsuits, and it is a good idea to have a set of your own. Snap a few pictures of your bike, any other vehicles that were involved in the crash, along with the surrounding area. The more pictures that you can take, the better. Take close-ups of any damage that may have been caused, and if you can, of any injuries that were sustained.

See If You Need A Lawyer

After all of the above steps are taken care of, the rest is likely in the hands of the insurance companies. They will use the information filed by the police in their report, along with the pictures of the scene, to figure out how everything will be handled. However in some situations, especially those in which one party was injured, you may need to hire a lawyer. For these situations you will want to look into getting a personal injury attorney, specifically one that specializing in motor vehicle accidents. A good lawyer can ensure that you are paid damages if they are warranted, and protect you from fraudulent lawsuits.

Learn From The Experience

Once you have had time to process everything, and all of the above steps have been taken, take a few minutes to try and remember what happened. What led to the accident in the first place? Was there something you could have done differently to avoid it? What changes can you make in the future – if any – to prevent this sort of thing from happening again? Learning from your mistakes is the best way to avoid them in the future, so take a few minutes once you have them to go over your accident, and see what you can learn.

Try To Keep A Clear Head

Getting into an accident is scary, but it is important to keep a clear head afterward. Take a few moments to breathe, and then start moving through the checklist above. By having a set list of things that you need to do, you can focus on one task at a time, and ensure that the accident protocol runs smoothly. Hopefully you’ll be able to keep this list in mind, and it will help you out if you are ever in an accident.
